Baccarat: Tips, Strategies and Winning

While virtually any gambling game ultimately gives the edge to the house, there are ways to maximize your chances of winning at Baccarat. Keep the following tips in mind whenever you set out to play.

  • Study: Become as familiar as you can be with the game before playing for money. See How to Play and the Rules, The Table, and The House Edge.
  • Practice: Before you lay down your own money on the table, play free practice versions of the game offered by most online casinos.
  • The Scorecard: In most real-world casinos, players at the table keep scorecards on which they notate each hand. They do this to try to notice patterns in the play, a practice that casinos encourage because it gives most players a false sense that there is predictability to the run of the cards. All a scorecard can actually do is tune your brain to the finer points of the game. Remember: The outcome of each hand is a matter of chance.
  • Card Counting: Many people will attempt to count cards at Baccarat as they would for Blackjack. Unlike that game, however, Baccarat returns used cards to the Shoe and does not allow for increasing bets in mid-hand, so the edge offered by card-counting—for those who have the mental capacity to perform it—evaporates.
  • Bet on the Banker: With the randomness of Baccarat in mind, pay attention to The House Edge and you’ll see that you stand a slightly better chance of winning if you bet on the Banker. While you might find doing so continuously to be monotonous, it does offer the opportunity to stay in the game slightly longer and minimize your losses. Of course, you may still want to take a chance on the Player, or even on a Tie, if you believe that Lady Luck might be with you!
